Schulz, President of the Airport Consultants Council (ACC), covers several key topics related to airport infrastructure, funding, and policy updates. The briefing begins with an overview of the financial needs for airport infrastructure from 2023 to 2027, highlighting a total requirement of $151 billion. This includes significant allocations for large, medium, small, and non-hub airports. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) estimates $62.4 billion in airport development projects eligible for funding under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). T.J. also discusses the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) funding and capital investment plans, focusing on the enhancement of checked baggage screening capabilities. This includes the deployment of new algorithms for increased threat detection and reduced false alarms, as well as the development of remote viewing and screening capabilities. The TSA's roadmap outlines ongoing and future tasks aimed at improving security and operational efficiency. Additionally, the briefing addresses the impact of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $20 billion for airport infrastructure improvements and an additional $5 billion for FAA air traffic control facilities. The priorities for airport terminal projects include increasing capacity, replacing aging infrastructure, improving accessibility, enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting competition. T.J. also touches on the potential implications of a second Trump administration, including changes in immigration policies and economic impacts. Finally, the briefing highlights future trends in airport development, such as the strong market for planning, design, and construction services, workforce challenges, and the integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. His presentation concluded with a call to action for stakeholders to collaborate, defend their needs, and prepare for upcoming opportunities and challenges in the aviation industry. - [Here’s what’s coming – September 2024 Meeting](https://iabsc.org/heres-whats-coming-june-2022-meeting-2/): You are invited to attend the IABSC Annual Meeting and Holiday Celebration at the Embassy Suites DFW Airport North Hotel - [2023 Innovation and Lifetime Achievement Awards](https://iabsc.org/2024-innovation-and-lifetime-achievement-awards/): Preparation is under way for the 2023 Innovation and Lifetime Achievement Awards. - [TSA Announcement – March 7th, 2023](https://iabsc.org/tsa-announcement-march-7th-2023/): FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                     - [IABSC Summit Sets Record for Attendance And Showcases the Emerging Future of Air Travel](https://iabsc.org/summit-recap/): IABSC Summit Sets Record for Attendance And Showcases the Emerging Future of Air Travel - [What you missed – September 8th Monthly Meeting](https://iabsc.org/heres-whats-coming-september-8th/): Melissa Lugo and Ben Koch of AS&M, presented on the benefits of simplifying and organizing data. Our industry is experiencing the return of confidence in the traveling public. Our meeting during July helped show some of the trends being experienced at different airports. Leisure travel is seeing summer peaks – the latest TSA statistics show that over 2 million passengers were screened this past Sunday. - [July Meeting Recap](https://iabsc.org/heres-whats-coming-july-iabsc-meeting-preview-2-3/): The commercial aviation market in the United States continues to increase coming into the summer period. This month, the TSA saw more than two million passengers in one day. This is the first time the commercial aviation sector has crossed this threshold since March 2020. Still, international restrictions and travel bans continue to restrict a full recovery of the aviation sector. - [June Meeting Recap](https://iabsc.org/march-meeting-recap-2/): Over the past few weeks, the US aviation sector has begun to climb. Traffic is picking up in many markets; not yet a full recovery, but airports and airlines are seeing a return of passengers. A combination of leisure and business travelers are returning to airports, airplanes, and putting baggage into the systems that we build and maintain. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-april-2021-2/): Over the past few weeks, I have been preparing the information provided to you in the June 10 IABSC meeting, “Regaining Altitude – Managing Industry Supply Chain Challenges”. Well, the time has come and in April we will discuss four future projects, Asheville Regional, Austin International, Dallas - Ft. Worth International and Tucson International airports. - [March Meeting Recap](https://iabsc.org/march-meeting-recap/): Regaining Altitude: Managing the Metrics (KPIs) - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-january-2021-2-2/): As our industry begins to take a peek around the corner, our expectations for a recovery have begun to brighten. Make no mistake, we are not yet out of the woods. Progress is being made. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-january-2021-2/): Welcome to 2021. - [What is the meaning of digital twinning and how it is applied](https://iabsc.org/what-is-the-meaning-of-digital-twinning-and-how-it-is-applied/): In simple terms, Digital Twinning is a process in which a physical object, system or a being is recreated on a virtual interface. During this stage, a fully developed digital replica is constructed in order for it to be used for future testing, development, and experimentation. Simply put, it is a digital replica or a clone that provides its manufacturers with the ability to interact with it on a digital platform instead of executing tests on the real physical “twin” in reality. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-january-2021/): As we closed 2020, the International Association of Baggage System Companies experienced many new and challenging circumstances. Our entire method of gathering together for educational purposes and networking was disrupted by the pandemic, reflective of the changes in society and business. We all have had to learn new ways to communicate and transact business. - [Using IIoT for predictive maintenance isn’t a panacea](https://iabsc.org/using-iiot-for-predictive-maintenance-isnt-a-panacea/): The ability to perform predictive maintenance is one of the most often mentioned advantages of industrial internet of things (IIoT) implementations. IIoT systems are not typically implemented primarily as an aid for predictive maintenance – rather, the initial motivation for the deployment of these systems is in order to achieve greater control over production, manufacturing, and power production processes. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-december-2020/): Not so fast… Let’s examine some facts that affect all of us. - [Meeting Recap: November](https://iabsc.org/meeting-recap-november/): The November meeting Cybersecurity Part 2 "Why it Matters" was well received by over 60 attendees.  It was a general overview of the technical issues, but the conversation's main strength was the focus on where BHS stands with other technologies in and Airport. BHS does not stand alone and is vulnerable to attacks via other digital platforms, and unwittingly can provide pathways for attacks to other systems. The potential risk is significant. The conclusion that there needs to be a focus on a common airport standard for dealing with Cybersecurity and particularly related to bid documents is on target. - [Here’s What’s Coming: November IABSC Meeting Preview](https://iabsc.org/heres-whats-coming-november-iabsc-meeting-preview/): The meeting will start with T.J. Schulz, President of ACC, who will tell us What’s Happening on the Hill.  T.J. will also introduce some exciting papers being published by ACC’s committees discussing best practices for IT Procurement. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-october-2020/): Last month I wrote in this column about the experiences of some colleagues who have been traveling recently. Within the past month, I have had opportunity to travel via airline on multiple trips. These visits have included meeting colleagues and business associates, who have all been impacted by the pandemic in different manners. Despite the countless challenges, the individuals I have interfaced with continue to exhibit a positivity in their work ethic and in the overall viewpoint of the future. - [Meeting Recap: October](https://iabsc.org/meeting-recap-october/): Southwest Airlines Director, Jeremy King, shared his concerns about the ineffectiveness of current contingency plans and illustrated some of the extraordinary efforts required by airline staff to make sure bags and passengers make the same flight during irregular operations. - [Here’s What’s Coming: October IABSC Meeting Preview](https://iabsc.org/heres-whats-coming/): Most times Airlines are left scrambling  teams and leveraging resources not designed to handle baggage movement when BHS outages occur, making it nearly impossible to prevent impact.  Being projects are not blessed with unlimited budgets, they are often times affected by systematic program reviews that have critical components omitted or changed.   Baggage handling systems are not immune to these changes and in most cases, are the primary focus of reductions in overall design elements.  We would all agree if polled,  Industry, Airport, and Airlines would rate Baggage handling systems as a high priority, but yet we continue to see examples to the contrary by sacrificing functionality for cost. - [Meeting Recap: September](https://iabsc.org/meeting-recap-september/): The IABSC had a fantastic turnout on September 10 for our monthly meeting, which was held through Zoom. Our first speaker was Mr. Andy Mena, the chair of our Government Relations committee. Andy shared some insight and a sneak preview on the soon to be released TSA PGDS 7.0. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-september-2020/): I have missed travel. I had to take a trip just after Labor Day. As I was landing on the return leg of my flight, I realized just how much I have missed traveling. - [Meeting Recap: August](https://iabsc.org/meeting-recap-august/): The IABSC’s monthly Members meeting for August was held on Thursday the 13th, holding to the traditional placement of “2nd Thursdays”.  The meeting was held in what has become the new COVID-19 tradition of a virtual, on-line Zoom meeting.  This month’s meeting was arranged as a panel discussion entitled “O&M Feedback on BHS Design”. We organized this topical discussion to fit nicely within the Association’s overarching theme for 2020/2021:  “Changing the Industry Standard”.   Unlike many of our monthly programs, this session targeted the downstream effects of BHS projects’ design & installation elements on the Operation & Maintenance of the baggage system. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-august-2020/): On behalf of the IABSC, greetings to all. I hope that you all remain safe and healthy. Our industry continues to navigate the challenges imposed on us by the health crisis. In discussions with colleagues from around the world, we face a challenge globally. - [Message from the Chairman of the IABSC Board](https://iabsc.org/from-the-chairman-july-2020/): As we head into summer, thoughts of vacation typically occupy the minds of many. Of course, with the health crisis cresting again, this has caused many to change their outlook on the typical summer trip. It seems that some people are taking a break from their shelter in place at home by hitting the road in a recreational vehicle. Of course, there will be humor found in the stories of some of these new RV travelers. A recent Wall Street Journal article make note of a few anecdotes - [July Sip & Chat Virtual Meeting Topic – Cybersecurity](https://iabsc.org/july-sip-chat-virtual-meeting-topic-cybersecurity/): Today more people are aware of cybersecurity and our digital vulnerabilities than ever before.  Organizations continue to adapt to the everchanging security landscape in our increasingly connected world.  While the corporate and home awareness of traditional IT security evolves, another term is beginning to creep into our vernacular. Operational Technologies or OT is a term used to describe the equipment and devices that make things work in countless industries around the globe.  From manufacturing and consumer products to Airport Baggage Handling Systems, operations technologies are responsible for making things happen.  With the advent of the Internet of Things or IoT, and the use of “smart” devices in industry, data is driving almost every aspect of our lives.  The connectivity required to make this happen has blurred the lines between the traditional IT and OT worlds.  Increased connectivity of IoT and OT devices has revealed unexpected vulnerabilities.  In this IABSC Session, we will continue our 2020 theme of “Changing the Industry Standard.” Our discussion will define what exactly is OT and OT Cyber Security, why it matters to you, what’s the least you need to know, and when should you call in an expert.  After a brief presentation, a panel of experts will discuss the topic and answer questions from the audience.  We are excited to help the IABSC Community understand the critical topic of OT Cybersecurity. - [Meeting Recap: June](https://iabsc.org/meeting-recap-june/): Cyber Security Cassandra McAllister - Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Daifuku Airport Technologies The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way that we work, live, and interact with others. We are currently living in unprecedented times where we are required to socially distance from others, reduce travel, and in some cases shelter in place. The past few months have presented new challenges within our industry, organization, the businesses of our members, and each of our individual lives.  I’m sure like many of you, my life has been far from “normal” which makes me have a greater sense of appreciation for some of the more mundane tasks and events that took place before COVID. I am sure that similar to some of you, the last time I traveled was to the March IASBC Meeting that took place in Dallas.  The IABSC meetings are something that I look forward to each month.  I thoroughly enjoy the educational presentations as well as the industry comradery and networking opportunities.  Over the past few months, the IABSC has taken a much-appreciated approach to the monthly meetings – hosting them virtually over Zoom. I know that I speak for many when I say that seeing familiar faces each month albeit on a computer screen has been a great way to keep some normalcy in our lives. On June 11th, the IABSC hosted the third virtual meeting where close to 80 IABSC members attended two presentations, in addition to a short networking session. The first session regarding Insurance and Risks was presented by Steve Buckner from the HILB Group.  Steve walked the virtual attendees through the ways that COVID-19 may impact a business’s insurance.  He covered many items from an employer’s liability to workers compensation as well as business interruptions. Steve discussed the overall state of affairs regarding insurance, specifically the effect of COVID-19 on businesses as the industry recovers. The second presentation of the evening was from Doug Deihl from Vanderlande in which he discussed how checkpoint is changing post COVID-19.  This was a presentation that I know many of us were looking forward to, as the pandemic will result in many changes in travel.  Doug’s presentation was incredibly useful as he broke down each change that may be required as airports find a new “normal” for travel, specifically to passenger checkpoints. Doug presented the following graphic that broke down his thoughts on a potential passenger journey post COVID-19.  The general consensus was that there would be recommended to have a much more socially distant and automated process for passengers as they move throughout the airport. While none of us know when our “normal” will begin, or what it will look like – it was wonderful to listen to what Doug believes our normal travel pattern could be and gave everyone hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel when all of this is over.  Although this has been an incredibly difficult time, especially within the aviation industry, I am confident that we will come out of this stronger together. Finally, the third presentation of the night gave everyone a glimmer of hope. Mark Baker discussed the current passenger and travel trends that Southwest Airlines is seeing.  He provided an airline perspective of both our current situation and his opinion on both long- and short-term impacts on the industry.  Mark informed the IABSC members that their passenger throughput levels had increased in the past two weeks.  Although it is nowhere near the last year’s passenger levels, there has been an increase from what they had seen since March. Mark is hopeful that over the next week weeks and months we will continue to see passenger travel increase both for business and leisure. The meeting wrapped up with a quick networking session amongst attendees where we were able to enjoy the industry comradery that we are all missing during this time of social distancing. Our in-person meetings and networking are very much missed, but the virtual sessions are a great way to stay connected to industry happenings as well as our peers until we can be together again. I am greatly looking forward to traveling to Dallas when we are able, but in the meantime, I will continue to log on to Zoom to chat with my fellow IABSC members.   About the Author: Cassandra McAllister is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Daifuku Airport Technologies.
